The Pursuit by Jamie Cullum
Verve Forecast

The fifth album of UK based singer/songwriting sensation Jamie Cullum, The Pursuit combines Cullum’s well known voice with rather experimental production techniques that’s sure to pleasantly surprise critics and fans. Throughout the album, Cullum’s musical diversity shows bravado and skill and his smooth vocals and is well backed by a number of talented performers, including Sophie Dahl.

Opening with a powerful big band piece, Just One of Those Things, does not disappoint as Cullum sticks to his trademark jazz-pop hybrid sound with his usual stellar keyboard and instrumental solos. His touched up rendition of the Cole Porter classic with his own original verse – is an appropriately upbeat opener to ease the listener into the overall fun tone of the album. But don’t be fooled into thinking this is your run of the mill jazz ensemble; Cullum takes some deviations from the norm, dipping into a number of experimental productions. The Rihanna cover of Don’t Stop the Music adds an unusual but very likable jazz feel to the R&B hit. The big finale, Music is Through, is startling with its initial house beats and intro but Cullum’s vocal styling really make the song work.  The voice, along with the blood sweat and tears behind this album are all Cullum and fans will appreciate the maturity of this collection.

The Pursuit has been one of Cullum’s longest running projects to date. The artist took time off from recording to perform in other bands and experimenting with other genres, including dance. This album is a unique blend of experimental sounds from the culmination of Cullum’s experiences.

Meanwhile, Cullum is coming to our shores this April and playing sold out shows in Melbourne and Sydney. You can find new release music including The Pursuit CD and other Jamie Cullum music at Sanity Entertainment.
