JOHNNY CLEGG ***POSTPONED NEW DATE YET TO BE CONFIRMED*** at the State Theatre Saturday, 29 November 2008 at 20:30

The white, English-speaking, society and Black, African, culture of South Africa was brought together by Johnny Clegg. Together with Sipho Mchunu, a Zulu musician who came to Johannesburg in search of work, Clegg formed South Africa's first multi-racial band, Juluka. In the seven years that they were initally together, the band recorded two platinum and five gold albums and became an international success. Following the group's disbanding in 1986, Clegg continued to blend African music with European pop influences with the band, Savuka. Reunited with Mchunu in the mid-1990s, Clegg reformed Juluka and toured throughout the world as opening act for King Sunny Ade. A native of Lancashire, England, Clegg moved to Africa as a youngster. Although he temporarily lived in Zimbabwe and Zambia, he eventually settled, with his family, in South Africa. Starting guitar at the age of fourteen, Clegg was introduced to South African music when he heard a street musician, Mntonganazo Mzila. Enchanted by what he heard, Clegg apprenticed himself to Mzila for two years, learning the basics of Zulu music and Inhlangwini dancing. Soon after meeting Sipho Mchunu and forming Juluka, Clegg recorded his debut single, "Waza Friday." Although racial prejudice in South Africa prevented their first album, Universal Man, from attaining radio airplay, the album became a word of mouth hit. Their second album, African Litany, released in 1981, included the South African hit, "Impi." Two years later, Juluka attracted international acclaim for their album, Scatterling. The political climate of South Africa began to take its tollon the group in the mid-1980s. By 1985, Clegg and Mchunu seperated with Mchunu returning to his homeland to work on his farm. Clegg's second band, Savuka, which took its name from the Zulu word meaning "we have risen" or "we have awakened", took a more pop-minded approach to African music. The group's debut album, Third World Child, sold more than two million copies. Following their second album, Shadow Man, the band embarked on a world tour, opening shows for Steve Winwood in the United States and George Michael in Canada. Savuka reached its peak with its fourth album, Heat, Dust And Dreams, which was nominated for a Grammy in the "best world music" category and received a Billboard music award as "Best World Music Album". ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Sting & Edin Karamazov - Australia 2008

New York, NY – In support of a special edition of the critically-acclaimed album, Songs from the Labyrinth – a personal tribute to late 16th-century Elizabethan composer, John Dowland (1563–1626) - Sting will embark on a tour of Australia this summer, joined by esteemed lutenist, Edin Karamazov, including performances in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth (see below for itinerary). Classical concert trio, ZBG will support.

Songs from the Labyrinth began as a Deutsche Grammophon recording project in 2006 which surpassed all expectations by debuting at the top of the classical charts in the US, UK, France, Canada & Germany. The album remained on Billboard’s #1 classical charts for fifteen consecutive weeks and was the top selling classical album of both 2006 and 2007. A DVD, entitled The Journey and the Labyrinth, followed the CD and was also released on Deutsche Grammophon. It was filmed appropriately at Sting's 16th-century manor house in Wiltshire (Lake House), in the ancient gardens of his home in Italy (Il Palagio), and at a live concert at St Luke’s Church in London.

To accompany the upcoming tour, Deutsche Grammophon will release a special edition of Songs from the Labyrinth (as pictured above) which features three bonus tracks, including Sting’s own Fields of Gold and Message in a Bottle, which he performs with Edin Karamazov on lute, as well as a special, live version of Robert Johnson’s Have You Seen the Bright Lily Grow, recorded in New York in September 2006.

The original Deutsche Grammophon release also garnered critical success. It was hailed as “a remarkable triumph” by London’s The Guardian and “exquisite“ by Japan’s Sankei newspaper whilst France’s Le Monde commented: “the poetry of this album, sung with painstaking care, comes from the exactitude & honesty with which the pop artist renders Dowland’s texts”.

Sting was first introduced to the music of John Dowland in the early 1980s, and has said that Dowland’s music has been “gently haunting” him for more than twenty years. Songs from the Labyrinth honors the life of John Dowland by not only recreating his music, but also his words. Sting incorporates short recitations of a letter John Dowland wrote in 1595 to Queen Elizabeth’s Secretary of State, Sir Robert Cecil, into the album, pleading his allegiance to the English throne in the hope of an invitation into the Royal Court, providing further insight to Dowland’s life and times.

Edin Karamazov has been Sting’s partner in this project from its conception. A protege of the legendary conductor Sergiu Celibidache, Edin Karamazov began his musical career with the classical guitar, continuing his studies of the Baroque Lute at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. His 2003 recording Come Heavy Sleep set new standards for lute playing and, as a soloist, he has performed and recorded with leading international early music ensembles and artists including the Hilliard Ensemble, Hesperion XX, Mala Punica and Andreas Scholl. Newly signed as an exclusive Decca artist, Edin Karamazov’s first recording on the label will be released this Autumn; entitled The Lute is a Song, the album traces 400 years of lute music from the Renaissance to the present day and features guest artists Kaliopi, Andreas Scholl, Sting and Renee Fleming.

ZBG takes its name from the surnames of its three members: Allan Zavod, David Berlin and Slava Grigoryan. All three musicians are respected in their own right and their highly original music encompasses the diverse backgrounds of these three musicians, resulting in inimitable ‘soundscapes’ of classical/jazz fusion. The music is uplifting and emotive, consisting of dazzling technical feats, moments of pure melodic and harmonic beauty, which result from perfectly coordinated dynamics within the ensemble, underpinned by strict classical discipline contrasting with totally free jazz rhythms and improvisations.

Also joining Sting and Edin Karamazov on this tour is the British a cappella choir Stile Antico, who are featured in all the European performances of Songs from the Labyrinth to date, giving vocal accompaniment to some of the more raucous tavern songs and gentle lullabies that are found in Dowland’s wide-ranging music. An ensemble in their own right, Stile Antico have won numerous awards for their recordings of 16th and 17th music as well as a Grammy award nomination for Best Small Ensemble Performance. Their next recording, Song of Songs, will be released in 2009.

Fans of the piano man prepare yourselves! The Frontier Touring Company welcomes back Billy Joel to Australia and New Zealand this November and December for a limited run of concerts. Billy will take to the stage in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney and - for the first time in 10 years will also play shows in Auckland and Adelaide.

Billy Joel is one of this century’s greatest musicians. Winning six Grammy Awards, selling in excess of 150 million albums worldwide, being inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and also the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame are just a few of the accolades Billy has clocked up over the years. Indeed it is thirty years since the release of Billy’s landmark album ‘The Stranger’. To celebrate this anniversary, Sony BMG are issuing ‘The Stranger 30th Anniversary Legacy’ edition with a bonus disc of live tracks. This collectors item is being released to coincide with the announcement of Billy’s tour through Sony BMG on Saturday July 12th.

Most recently Billy has been awarded the prestigious honour of giving the final ever musical performance at the renowned Shea Stadium. A sporting venue by trade – the home of the New York Mets major baseball league team – it has also had an illustrious music career that has seen performances from everyone such The Beatles and Led Zeppelin to name but a few. It’s a fitting end to have the incomparable Billy Joel, a native New Yorker, close the final curtain on this hallowed ground.

In 2006 Billy toured Australia thrilling the audiences and critics alike by playing all the favourites – Piano Man, Uptown Girl, New York State of Mind, River of Dreams and Tell Her About It amongst many others – in a two and a half hour spectacular. Breaking attendance records across Australia, Billy left everyone enraptured with his performances.

The Herald Sun announced: “…his performance showed why he remains one of the premier acts of the world”. The Courier Mail were similarly thrilled: “There were no huge screens, no pyrotechnics, no gimmicks at all – unless you count a revolving piano – because Joel didn’t need them. The focus was all on the piano man – just as it should be.”

“Billy Joel performed with expertise and intensity all night long.” announced The Age, and the Sydney Morning Herald concurred: “…he is a well-seasoned entertainer, with a gift for writing songs that push all the crowd-pleasing buttons.”

Tickets to see Billy Joel were snapped up in record time, and with Auckland and Adelaide added to the agenda, you can expect demand to be unprecedented.
